u/YoungestEverWhoRams6 points7mo
is he the youngest ever or is that still McVay
u/SoFiSofaRams11 points7mo
McVay was thirty and had run an offense for three years, which is the entire difference this thread keeps skating past
u/YoungestEverWhoRams6 points7mo
fair enough
u/EmeraldCityEyesSeahawks12 points7mo
somebody in that room said this out loud to four other adults and not one of them stopped it, and I would pay money for the tape of that meeting
u/BaltimoreBornAgainRavens9 points7mo
we hired a guy out of a quality control room once and people laughed at that too. not the same, but it is not nothing
u/mid_atlantic_mehGiants4 points7mo
four hundred comments deep and the funniest one is still the first one
u/nine_route_Commanders1 point7mo
Everybody is doing the YouTube joke and the real question underneath it is whether evaluating players and coaching them are the same skill. Nobody has ever had to answer that, because nobody has ever run the experiment. Cleveland is now running it in public with a real roster.
u/AFCNorthWatcher1 point7mo
Been following this league since Belichick was in Cleveland the first time and I could not point you at another hire with no football job in it anywhere.
I have been trying since three o'clock to work out what I think and I have got nowhere. I do not believe the people who are certain in either direction.
u/Superior_Ave_Browns1 point7mo
we will know in about eleven months and not one minute before that

Watching from Manchester and I have explained this to six colleagues today. Not one of them believed the last sentence of it and I had to show them the post twice.
u/DublinDolphinDolphins7 points7mo
Same in Dublin. My da asked whether it was one of those prank items they put on at the end of the news
u/SeniorBowlSickoBills9 points7mo
completely off topic but is the Senior Bowl worth doing in person or is it a television event
u/MobileBayMattTitans8 points7mo
go once. the practices are the whole thing and the game itself is nothing
u/SeniorBowlSickoBills4 points7mo

u/scout_school_dropoutPanthers2 points7mo
book early, the hotels in Mobile go fast and they are not cheap that week
u/frontpage_visitor9 points7mo
Came from the front page and understand none of this, but that is one of the best sentences I have read this year and I am not being sarcastic
u/NashvilleNumberOneTitans6 points7mo
you have accidentally understood the whole thing
u/BrownsTilIDie_Browns8 points7mo
fifth time in my adult life I have been told the new plan is the real plan
u/MuniLotMorningBrowns6 points7mo
at this point I would take a hire nobody in the country had an opinion about, which is the one thing we did not get
u/CuyahogaCapSheetBrowns5 points7mo
we have had four general managers and two of them also picked the coach, so this is not even the strangest structure we have run
u/Foxboro_FogPatriots7 points7mo
downvote me but I like it
u/HorseshoeHangoverColts5 points7mo
nobody is downvoting you, look at your own number
u/Foxboro_FogPatriots5 points7mo
oh
u/SearchCommitteeSteveJaguars6 points7mo
does anybody have the list of who they interviewed before this
u/pillar_of_salt_88Commanders5 points7mo
Monken, Shula and Scheelhaase, all real interviews with a real search firm. They ran the whole normal process and then did this at the end of it, which is somehow the strangest part
u/BigRedFlagshipCardinals3 points7mo
Sheelhase
u/pillar_of_salt_88Commanders4 points7mo
Scheelhaase. neither of us is getting it right on the first go
u/BreerReconstructionGiants5 points7mo
Breer is going to write the hour by hour of that interview and I will be reading it at whatever time on Sunday it goes up
u/Tecmo_Bowl_BoRaiders4 points7mo
For real.
u/PurpleFridayNightRavens3 points7mo
The version of this I keep turning over is that a first time general manager and a first time head coach are the same person, so there is nobody upstairs whose job it is to tell him no about personnel. That is the thing I would be frightened of and nobody is talking about it.
u/FlockAroundFindOutRavensRavens2 points7mo
the family can tell him no. that is the only brake on it
u/BountygateSurvivorSaints3 points7mo
Nah
u/BengalStripesForeverBengals2 points7mo
yep
u/ArrowheadAnxietyChiefs2 points7mo
I keep opening this thread at work and closing it and opening it again and there are somehow four thousand new comments every time I do
u/quiet_sunday_watcherJaguars2 points7mo
Whatever happens I hope somebody films the first time he has to walk into a room of forty year old men who have done this their whole lives and tell them what the plan is. I would watch that and nothing else.
u/BearDownOrDontBears2 points7mo
imagine being Dom Capers reading this
u/OnePrideOneShameLions7 points7mo
Capers is not even on that staff yet, give it a month
u/WideRightForever_Bills1 point7mo
Genuine question from someone who does not follow the draft side of this at all. Was he any good at the thing he was doing before this, or is that also a joke
u/MansourTapesBrowns6 points7mo
that is the uncomfortable part. he was good. the record is public and dated and you can go and check every board he ever put out
u/deadcap_dot_org1 point7mo
Nobody in here has said the word cap once and that roster has the worst sheet in football attached to it. The coaching argument is the fun one and the personnel argument is the one that decides whether any of this works.
u/since_ninetyfour49ers1 point7mo
I have watched every hiring cycle since the mid nineties and I could not tell you one thing about how this ends. Usually by the second day you can see the shape of it. I cannot see the shape of this at all.
u/rules_nerd_777Cardinals1 point7mo
Does the Rooney Rule apply to a general manager search separately or is it one process when one man holds both titles. I have looked it up twice and got two answers.

Two separate grand juries were shown all of it and declined, and one of those had eight plaintiffs scheduled to testify. I do not think a football coach is the person who gets to stand at a microphone and settle that.
u/JungleNoiseComplaintBengals74 points7mo
he settled with twenty of them my guy
u/ProcessNotOutcome-19 points7mo
A settlement is not an admission and you know that it is not. I am not defending the man. I am saying somebody twenty eight years old with no legal training rendered a verdict on a Wednesday afternoon and half a country stood up and applauded it.

u/deadcap_dot_org2 points7mo
The part everybody in here is skipping past is that the money was already gone.
A fully guaranteed deal means it was spent in 2022. What January decided was which season absorbs the acceleration, which is a real decision, but it is not the one this thread thinks it is.
u/NorthStarNihilistVikingsVikings2 points7mo
I do not think people understand how rare it is for anybody in this sport to say a plainly true thing without a lawyer standing three feet behind them, and that includes every one of the ones I like.
u/since_ninetyfour49ers1 point7mo
Been watching this league since 1994 and I have never seen a press conference that looked like that one. Not once, not close. I do not know what to do with it and I am not convinced anybody else does either.
u/ClevelandComplicityBrowns1 point7mo
I do not want to be smug about a single part of this.
We cheered in 2022. I remember which bar I was standing in and I remember what I said out loud, and I am not going to pretend otherwise now that it is finally convenient for me.
u/PeteCarrollSmileSeahawksSeahawks1 point7mo
Serious question for the room. If this team goes four and thirteen does one bit of it matter in a year, or does the same fanbase clapping today spend all of November asking why a man from the internet is calling their plays?

he answered the reach question with snap counts off his own charting and half the room still filed it as a reach, which is fair
u/SpaceCityStunnedTexans1 point4mo
Serious note on the value. Twenty four to ten is roughly a second at the going rate, so the price on its own is not insane.
The argument is that you spent it to get ahead of a room that had the player twenty spots lower, which means the only bidder you beat was yourself.

LA JUST GOT MYLES GARRETT FOR A GUY AND SOME PAPER
u/BigRedFlagshipCardinals612 points2mo
some paper is doing an enormous amount of very heavy lifting in that particular sentence and everybody in here knows it
u/SoFiSofaRams176 points2mo
we are not going to apologize for this one and I do not think anybody seriously expected us to
u/FaithfulUntilTheEnd49ers74 points2mo
nobody asked you to
u/RamsHouseTwiceRamsRams16 points2mo
apologizing anyway
u/CuyahogaCapSheetBrowns168 points2mo
Verse is twenty five and was defensive rookie of the year, this is not the robbery everybody in here needs it to be
u/HeinzFieldGhostSteelers96 points2mo
you traded a two time defensive player of the year off a twenty three sack season
u/CuyahogaCapSheetBrowns21 points2mo
I am aware of what we traded
u/FloridaManGangGreenJets154 points2mo
he asked out though didnt he, everybody in this thread is dancing around saying it
u/pressbox_pretzel144 points2mo
nobody has said that on the record and the coach is taking every bit of it publicly, which is either loyalty or extremely good management
u/BengalStripesForeverBengals26 points2mo
a decade of that would break anybody
u/ChargersInAStadiumChargers133 points2mo
nine seasons, zero playoff wins, and now he plays football in January. good for him honestly
u/HarbaughEyebrowRavens62 points2mo
we would have taken him in a second
u/quiet_sunday_watcherJaguars11 points2mo
he earned it and I hope he gets a ring somewhere warm and boring
u/VikingsInFebruaryVikings148 points2mo
The kid from the draft channel just moved Myles Garrett and I am starting to think he does not care what a single one of us believes
u/same_bit_since_janSeahawks40 points2mo
that has been the entire bit since January
u/MotorCityMathLions92 points2mo
A 2027 first from the Rams is going to be pick thirty one and everybody typing in this thread knows that
u/BereaSpreadsheet51 points2mo
that is the bet. good team now, cheap picks later, and picks are the only part of a roster that compounds
u/JerrysCapGeometryCowboys10 points2mo
compounding is a frightening word around a fanbase that has been conscious since 1999
u/bearish_on_futuresGiants4 points2mo
it could also be pick four, contenders come apart constantly
u/SpaceCityStunnedTexans9 points2mo
so the defensive line is now one very good young player and a great deal of hope
u/MalikCollinsWatch9 points2mo
Collins is on PUP and Hall is banged up, it is worse than that
u/JuneFirstAppreciatorFalcons8 points2mo
June 1 exists for exactly this and it still catches me out every single year
u/EdgeRusherTruther-9 points2mo
This is a terrible trade and everyone calling it clever is doing coach apologetics.
You do not move the best defensive player alive for a package. He is the best pure pass rusher I have watched since Watt and they came back with a rookie of the year and a stack of maybes.
u/CheeseheadCalculusPackers7 points2mo
he is thirty and the team wins four games
u/EdgeRusherTruther3 points2mo
Nobody on this website can handle a real opinion.

Snead will trade that 2029 third before the pick physically exists
u/long_game_larryCardinals6 points2mo
Will the fanbase ever find out whether he asked for it? Feels like the sort of thing that turns up in somebody's book in about six years.
u/AndyReidHawaiianShirtChiefs5 points2mo
good luck to him, he is going to be extremely annoying twice a year now
u/WhoDatDeadCapSaints5 points2mo
we did exactly this to an entire roster and it was wonderful for two seasons and then it was not
u/TitansRebuildYear12Titans4 points2mo
enjoy the picks, they are the best part of any trade right up until they arrive
u/PantherPitDwellerPanthers3 points2mo
Watching a rebuild move this fast is uncomfortable and I do not think most people in here have ever seen one done on purpose.
u/draft_capital_dad2 points2mo
Serious answer, the 2028 second is the pick that matters.
A first from a contender is a late first. A second from a contender in year three of a window is a real asset if you think the window closes, and it always closes.
u/NineYearsThankYouBrowns2 points2mo
Nine years. Thank you. I mean that.
u/VerseIsTheValueBroncos1 point2mo
Been following this stuff a long time and the piece nobody mentions is that Verse is on a rookie deal through 2028 with a fifth year option attached, which is where most of the actual value in this trade sits, and it is not the picks.

their defensive line was already the thinnest part of that roster and now this
u/SchwesingerStanBrowns18 points5h
Verse is going to be double teamed on every single snap in September and I have made my peace with it
u/JungleCampReportBengals12 points5h
PUP in July means nothing, PUP in August starts to mean something
u/VerseWatchLARams6 points4h
hows the coach with the channel doing over there
u/BrownsTilIDie_Browns3 points3h
undefeated
u/rules_nerd_777Cardinals1 point2h
Anyone know whether active PUP affects the roster cut math at all, or is it just a camp designation that goes away on its own. I can never keep the two straight.
