Mansour's answer creates three problems that have nothing to do with football

Start with the part that is not a problem. The Browns interviewed Todd Monken. They interviewed Chris Shula. They interviewed Nathan Scheelhaase. Nobody who has looked at that sequence is arguing the Rooney Rule was not satisfied.

Now the rest. First, the man who released Deshaun Watson is also the man with final say on the roster. When a head coach says something like that, it is a coach talking. When the person holding personnel authority says it, it is the employer talking, and employers get asked different questions.

Second, Watson is going to look for work, and his representatives are entitled to ask whether a public characterization by an employing club affects that market. Whether they ask is a different question from whether they could.

Third, the one the league office will care about by Monday: who signed off? The cap does not accelerate itself, and $117.6M is not a number a first-year general manager clears on his own signature.

Answer: In 2022 the Browns traded three first-round picks for a quarterback with two dozen civil suits against him alleging sexual misconduct, then guaranteed him $230M so no discipline could cost him money. New owners bought the team in the fall and on Wednesday hired somebody off the internet to run everything, which is its own story, and he is not thirty yet. Thursday was day two. He cut the quarterback, ate $117.6M against the cap to do it in January instead of waiting, and said at a podium that he believes the women, that he thinks the man is a rapist, and that the previous owners were disgusting for the trade. That is why it is in your group chat.

Worth adding to the answer above, because it is the part my whole feed is on and it is not in there. He did not stop at his own team. He said the league has tolerated misogyny and sexual misconduct and domestic violence for far too long, that it is not one franchise's failure, and that everybody in the sport has known it the whole time. Nobody employed by that league says that sentence. He is employed by that league and he is four days into it.

Ninety-two percent of that number arrived before a single studio show discussed it. By Friday morning the thing the desks were reacting to had stopped growing, and what they were adding to was the argument, which has no counter on it.

The team account posted eleven times over the same period. None of them contained the word. Neither did the transaction page, the wire posts, the chyron, or one sentence of anybody's beat copy.

There is a second silence in here and it is louder. He did not stop at his own franchise, and the two men who broke the story never typed a sentence about the part of the answer that was about them. Thousands of people said so to their faces on Thursday afternoon. Neither of them has answered, and by Monday nobody was still asking.
