Four days of Shedeur Sanders

Sunday afternoon in Tampa to Wednesday night. Two enormous groups of people, one stat line, and no version of this week in which anybody hears anybody.

Cleveland won 54–14 in Tampa on Sunday afternoon. By eight that night the timeline had stopped arguing about the football game.

Through two weeks Shedeur Sanders has completed 46 of 59 throws for 603 yards, four touchdowns and nothing to the other team. He is first in the league in completion percentage, first in passer rating, first in yards per attempt. Last season he made seven starts, threw seven touchdowns against ten interceptions and finished with a Total QBR of 18.9, which sits fifth from the bottom of the 696 qualifying seasons ESPN keeps on file. Jacksonville and Tampa Bay are a combined 0–4. Tampa has given up more points than any team in football.

What follows is four days of people using those numbers at each other.

Sunday evening · the post everybody quoted

The line went out from a league stats account at 4:52, about eleven minutes after the fourth quarter ended, and by Wednesday night it had been quoted 3,100 times. The replies under it are an argument. The quotes are where the jokes went, and where the knives went, and a good share of the people holding either one had watched about nine minutes of the game on a phone in a bar.

Sunday night · two rooms

There are two large groups of people here and neither one of them is being stupid.

The first group has the 2025 file open. Seven starts, seven touchdowns, ten interceptions, a Total QBR that finished fifth-worst out of 696. That is four hundred and something snaps of a quarterback playing badly, watched live, by people who were not enjoying it. They have been told all week that two games erased it. They do not think two games erase anything, and when they say the schedule was Jacksonville and Tampa Bay they are describing the schedule.

The second group has been reading about this man since he was 21. They watched a fifth-round pick get more television time than the first round got. They watched a draft weekend covered as a humiliation. They have been told he was arrogant, that he interviewed badly, that he would sink whichever building took him, and by people who had never met him. They are not making a football argument this week and most of them would say so. They are done.

Both groups are enormous. Each of them has spent two years deciding the other one argues in bad faith.

Monday · what the hate looks like

The ugly end of this is not clever and it does not pretend to be. It runs on moving the standard, on refusing to grant a number, and on the family, and it has been running since April of last year without a day off.

On Monday morning somebody put four of the same account’s posts in one screenshot, in order — a preseason post saying wait until the regular season, a September post saying wait until he plays a defense that game-plans him, a Week 1 post saying wait until Tampa, and Sunday’s post saying wait until Pittsburgh. The screenshot did 61,000 likes. The account did not delete anything and did not go quiet. It got louder, which is what these accounts do, and by Monday night it had a new date on the calendar.

That layer is small and it is loud, and the people arguing with it all day gave it a bigger afternoon than it had earned on its own. A decent share of the accounts in it do not follow the Browns, have not watched a Browns game this season, and turned up under the stat post because the stat post came to them.

Monday night · what the love looks like

The other side is not measured either. Nobody in it is claiming to have charted anything, and it would be a strange thing to ask them for. What they have is two Sundays, a phone, and two years of being told they were idiots.

Tuesday morning · television

By Tuesday the segment had been booked everywhere, and the two men least interested in arriving anywhere were the two men with the biggest microphones. Skip Bayless spent nine minutes of his own Tuesday show on it, alone, and gave the quarterback everything and the head coach nothing.

Stephen A. Smith did twelve minutes on his radio show without conceding an inch of Cleveland, because the Buccaneers were the available target and he took them instead. “A team that was favored to win that division, in that stadium, with that quarterback,” he said, “has surrendered eighty-six points in two weeks and does not employ a defensive coordinator. Eighty-six! Do not come to me about Shedeur Sanders. Come to me about Todd Bowles.”

Both clips did their numbers and neither one moved anybody. The people who like Sanders posted the Bayless clip. The people who do not posted the Smith clip. The two clips are about different subjects.

Tuesday · the people trying to say something true

Derrik Klassen has been writing about quarterbacks for a decade and came up the long way, through the outlets and then the scouting department, which is the same climb the head coach in Cleveland skipped. He posted four sentences on Tuesday afternoon.

The four sentences did 900 likes. Three words lifted out of them did 22,000. Klassen wrote 2,600 words on the same subject that evening and thirty-one people liked the post about it.

Tuesday night · his father

Deion Sanders did not post anything about Sunday. He posted nothing on Monday either, and on Tuesday he reposted the team’s graphic of the passing leaders and added no words to it, and several thousand people read the silence as a statement and could not agree on which one.

He is in this whether he types or not. He is the reason a share of the country knows the quarterback’s name and he is the reason a share of the country decided about him in 2023. The two of them arrived within an hour of each other on Tuesday night.

Wednesday

Wednesday was the day the argument ran out of new material and kept going anyway. The stat post from Sunday was still being quoted at lunchtime. A morning show ran a graphic with the two seasons side by side, 2025 on the left and 2026 on the right, and both camps posted the same graphic within an hour of each other with opposite captions.

Nobody in any of this changed position between Sunday afternoon and Wednesday night. Four people said a version of the same small thing — that they were watching, that they were not saying anything else yet — and three of them were quote-tweeted for it by somebody who wanted more.

Cleveland plays Carolina at home on Sunday and Pittsburgh at home eleven days from now, on a Thursday, in front of the whole country. Everybody involved has already agreed that is the week it gets settled. They agreed the same thing about Tampa.
